Our Story
Trinidad and Tobago is a twin island nation in the southern Caribbean. Two islands, one table, and some of the boldest food in the world. That’s the name on our door, Twin Isle, and it’s the promise behind everything we serve.
Chef Janelle Romeo grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, where food sat at the center of the best memories. Trips to the doubles stand on the corner, hours spent watching her grandmother cook, the kind of cooking that doesn’t come from a recipe card. That’s where her love of food began. In 2020 she brought those flavors to Texas with Shirley’s Trini Cuisine, the East Austin food truck that became a neighborhood institution and introduced a generation of Austinites to real Trinidadian food.
In September 2025, Janelle planted deeper roots in the community she’d been feeding for years just across the street from the corner where the truck parked. Twin Isle opened on Rosewood Avenue as a bright, lively space where everything is made from scratch daily. Authentic curries, rotis made to order by hand, oxtail stewed low and slow until it falls apart. And on weekends only, Doubles, the beloved Trini street food. Making them is a true labor of love, one Janelle dedicates to her culture.
“This restaurant is a love letter to my Caribbean roots. Each dish tells a story of where I come from, who raised me, and what I want to share with Austin.”
